How to Use a Facial Scrub

A facial scrub can leave your skin noticeably smoother.  Like all exfoliation, it is a nice treatment for both acne and wrinkles because it removes dead skin cell and other debris.  This can also make your wrinkle cream, facial, or acne treatment more effective by allowing it to penetrate skin cells easier instead of being wasted on the dead skin cells that often block absorption.

Most facial scrubs are a type of manual or mechanical exfoliation.  This method uses abrasion to correct skin issues or give the skin a polished appearance.  The results you’ll get depend largely on the pressure you use, how abrasive your scrub is, and how often you use it.  Although most people notice a difference in smoothness right away, lasting changes in skin texture take time.  Stronger methods like microdermabrasion are needed for lasting wrinkle reduction.

It is possible to damage your skin by using a facial scrub.  Many people use too much pressure and cause unseen superficial scratches to the skin.  Sometimes, such controlled damage is helpful, but the grit must be very small.  Most facial scrubs, especially scrubbing face washes, have exfoliators such as nut hulls that are too large for this.  It’s important to remember that it is more effective to use less pressure for a longer period of time, than it is to scrub vigorously and quickly.  Scrub may actually be a bad word to use, because it makes many people think of scouring dishes.  Polishing or buffing is probably a better way to describe the process.

Choosing an Acne Facial Scrub

Many people who are looking for a facial scrub suffer from acne.  One of the best facial scrubs for this is an exfoliating face wash.  Apricot or walnut shells, adzuki powder, or jojoba beads are common exfoliators.  These products allow you to exfoliate and cleanse in one step.  By polishing while the wash, you are able to remove dead skin, dirt, and other debris that can clog pores and cause pimples.  This is how exfoliation will make other acne treatments, like clay masks or glycolic and salicylic acid products more effective.  They will not be impeded by an inert layer and can work directly on the fresh skin as intended.  Sometimes a facial scrub for acne will also contain salicylic acid or peroxide, which also help unclog pores.

Microdermabrasion Facial Scrubs

Facial scrubs can do more than help acne and unclog pores.  Stronger products like a microdermabrasion scrub, system, or cloth can also tackle bigger problems like wrinkles, uneven pigmentation, and acne scars.  Some people even see an improvement in mild facial sagging over time because microdermabrasion can stimulate the production of collagen.

It is easier to damage your skin with the stronger facial scrub products.  If you are using a system that has a wand, it is easier to concentrate on the pressure you use because the rotating head is taking care of the buffing motion.  With a cloth or scrub however, it is easier to use too much pressure and remove too much skin.  You might not feel pain, but notice the damage hours later, so don’t let pain be your guide.  Think, “polish” instead of “scrub”.  The abrasive gritty crystals or cloth is what is doing the exfoliating, not the pressure or speed.  If you do damage your skin, don’t stress too much.  Just lay off of exfoliation for a week or so, and in the mean time treat your skin with a renewing cream that contains copper peptides of Vitamin C.  It will help you heal faster and more evenly

How Often Should You Use A Facial Scrub?

There is no one rule for how often to exfoliate.  Many people use an exfoliating face wash every morning or evening.  For the more serious products that involve microdermabrasion, most skin care experts advise only once or twice a week.  If you are using facial scrubs to remove acne scars or wrinkles, you’ll probably need to exfoliate 4-6 times a week.  You may also wish to include chemical exfoliation like glycolic peels.  You need to work your way up to this level of exfoliation gradually.  Start off with once a week.  Do not use microdermabrasion and chemical exfoliation in the same session.  It can take several months for your skin can build up a tolerance to this level.

Since heavy exfoliation reduces imperfections with controlled damage, you need to use something to help your skin rejuvenate after exfoliating.  A copper peptide cream can be very useful, as well as other ingredients like Vitamin C or retinoids.  Sunscreen is also very important because such serious skin care methods can me your skin sunburn very easily.  It takes a few months of frequent use to see awesome results, although you will see improvement along the way.  With dedication, such a skin regimen can really improve skin problems such as acne, scarring, and wrinkles.  You can get amazing skin by incorporating a good facial scrub into your routine.
