Sometimes dry skin types have difficulty finding a face wash that suits their needs. Traditional cleansers contain detergents like sulfates that can irritate and further dry out your skin. Even products that say they are designed for dry skin can aggravate the condition. The best facial cleanser for dry skin is often not the cheapest.
If you have this problem look for a cleansing milk facial cleanser. These are very mild and full of soothing natural ingredients but also contain detergents that gently clean the skin. They are usually sulfate free and may or may not foam. They are very moisturizing and luxurious and are usually the best choice for dry skin.
You may want to consider trying non-foaming facial cleansers like a cold cream. These old standbys don’t strip the skin like a traditional face wash and are very popular in Europe. You won’t get that squeaky clean feeling that you are used to, because they lift dirt and debris off of your skin with a cream base and leave a moisturizing residue behind. If you find they leave you a bit too oily, or prefer to know that there is nothing left behind on your skin, you can still incorporate them into your routine. Use them to remove make up and then follow up with a very quick wash with a mild detergent based cleanser.
If you prefer to use detergents, like for a natural product that is sulfate free. The term natural is not regulated and may not indicate that the wash is 100% truly natural, but they typically contain natural soothing ingredients like Vitamin E and less irritating cleansers. Avoid cheap products claiming to be natural because they are typically harsh and only using the word for label appeal.
If you’d like a truly all-natural product, try a soap-based wash. They contain natural glycerin and very low levels of vegetable oils, and sometime other nice ingredients like aloe and essential oils. You can also try a clay-based cleanser. These are often dry and need to be mixed with water to form a paste that you use like a mask.
If you have problems with flaky skin, you may want to try a glycolic acid facial cleanser. Dry skin needs exfoliation to remove dead skin. Glycolic cleansers don’t peel the face, but can actually help improve dry and sensitive skin. If this layer of dead skin isn’t removed, your skin creams can’t properly hydrate the live skin below.
Finding the best facial cleanser for dry skin can be challenging, and unfortunately most cheap face washes won’t do the trick. Look for something natural, and don’t be afraid to use something that doesn’t foam or leaves a moisturizing residue behind on the skin.
